The TV shows I watched growing up will always have a special place in my heart and one of these is Charmed, the iconic fantasy drama revolving around the lives of three sister witches, the ‘Charmed Ones’, who tackle demons, warlocks, and the dating scene a decade before the invention of Tinder.

From the 90s fashion (these gals were sporting chokers when Kendall Jenner was still in babygrows) to the catchy soundtrack, I struggle to think of any show as bewitching, entertaining, and endearing as Charmed. It’s been almost 13 years since the final episode aired but that doesn’t make it any less relevant or entertaining in my eyes. If I happen to stumble upon an episode whilst flicking through the channels, I can kiss goodbye to my work for the next 40 minutes, and a Charmed mug is still nestled in my kitchen cupboard. However, in January, the CW, the US TV network behind the original series, announced that a reboot of Charmed is in the works which begs the question – can a reboot ever live up to the original?

My immediate response is no, never. There were so many unique ingredients that made the Charmed potion the roaring success that it was, and I vehemently doubt that any reboot could cast such a spell on its audience. What really ruffles my broomstick is that the CW has described the reboot as “fierce, funny, and feminist” which is nothing short of absurd. The original series was the definition of “fierce, funny, and feminist”. Until being usurped by Desperate Housewives in 2012, it was the longest-running TV show ever to feature an all-female lead cast and it projected a positive message to a generation of girls about independence, sisterhood, and girl power.

It was a magical portrayal of female relationships

The source of the witches’ powers was their sisterly bond, giving them the “Power of Three”, without which their powers were considerably weaker, highlighted in an episode which sees the sister witches completely lose their magic after using it against each other. It was a magical portrayal of female relationships; they not only loved each other but quite literally powered each other on, and I struggle to think of a better metaphor for strong women supporting strong women (may we know them, may we be them, may we watch them vanquish demons on TV).

On a more sartorial note, unlike other world-saving women in TV, Charmed’s Halliwell sisters didn’t sacrifice a morsel of femininity in their fight against evil. Each episode saw them getting down and dirty with demons and warlocks, but the risk of a little demon ichor didn’t stop them giving the Sex and the City fashionistas a run for their money with their kitten heels and lashings of lip gloss. Thus, they showed all female viewers that being a strong woman doesn’t mean toning down your feminine side (and gave everyone a lesson in how to rock a halter neck).

Another aspect that gave Charmed the magic touch was its stars, who I believe are irreplaceable. Shannen Doherty, Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs portrayed sisters Prue, Phoebe, and Piper in the first three seasons, and Rose McGowan joined the cast in the fourth season as quirky Paige, replacing Doherty. Not only did they have electric chemistry, these actresses each brought something special to the characters; they were wildly different but equally lovable, hilarious, and, well, charming. They left the male stars in the (Book of) Shadows and I can’t see how any actresses could fill their designer boots.

Lastly, Charmed was entertaining in an often light-hearted, and sometimes-cheesy, way. Its story-a-week format allowed for a plethora of novelty episodes, from travelling back to the 1960s via a pair of crimson go-go boots to Phoebe becoming a mermaid, nobody could ever accuse the show of being boring and these wacky stories prevented it from becoming too moody, a gloomy path that many supernatural dramas take nowadays. I fear that the reboot will be too dark and angsty, subduing the fun spirit of the original series.

However, despite my hardcore wiccan-like worship of the original Charmed, I’ll still be tuning in when the reboot airs and I hope that I will be proven wrong. Its cast is more diverse which is obviously a good thing, and I hope that this modernity, alongside a touch of the traditional Charmed magic, will cast a spell for success that bewitches the world all over again.

Volgens de laatste nieuwsberichten zouden onderstaande informatie al gelekt zijn over de nieuwe ‘Charmed’ reeks. Dit is echter nog niet bevestigd door de CW, ook is er nog niets bekend over de eventuele castleden in de reeks.

De meeste fans hebben tranen met tuiten gehuild toen in 2006 de laatste aflevering van Charmed werd uitgezonden. Vanaf toen moesten we het zonder de legandarische heksenzusters Phoebe, Piper, Paige en ook Prue doen! Maar na 12 jaar is er weer licht aan het einde van de tunnel. Er komt een namelijk reboot van de populaire heksenserie Charmed.

Er wordt steeds meer bekend over de Charmed reboot en dus besloten wij om alles voor jullie uit te zoeken en het op een rijtje te zetten!

Nieuwe heksenzusters
Met de laatste aflevering in 2006 hebben we voorgoed afscheid moeten nemen van de Halliwell zusjes. Phoebe, Paige, Piper en Prue zullen dan ook niet terugkeren in de Charmed reboot. We gaan kennis maken met nieuwe zusjes. De namen zijn nog niet officieel bevestigd, maar de geruchten gaan dat de zusjes in de Charmed reboot Macy, Mel en Madison gaan heten. Dit keer dus geen namen die allemaal met een P beginnen, maar met een M. Er is zelfs al iets bekend over de karakters van de nieuwe zusjes in de Charmed reboot.

Macy, eind 20, is een geestige en intense nerd met een Ph.D. in Kwantumfysica. Ze woont met haar vriend Galvin in Hilltown, Michigan, en werkt in een universitair lab. Macy heeft een reden om te denken dat zij de zus is van Mel en Madison. Haar kracht is telekinesis (dezelfde kracht als die van Prue en Paige).

Mel Pruitt is een sterke feminist en is een beetje een controlfreak. Mel, midden 20, is de zus van Madison en is lesbisch. In de nasleep van een tragisch ongeluk kan de rouwende Mel niet goed met haar gevoelens omgaan. Ze wordt snel boos, is uitdagend, onverzorgd en zelfs geweldadig! Ze keert zich af van iedereen die haar wil helpen, inclusief haar vriend (en politieagent) Soo Jin. Mel is degene van de zusjes die de tijd kan stilzetten (dezelfde kracht als die van Piper).

Madison Pruitt is de jongste van het stel en is pas 18 jaar oud. Ze houdt van sport (pilates en cheerleading) en zit nog op school. Ze probeert er bij te horen en is eigenlijk het tegenovergestelde van haar zuster Mel. Madison vindt het vreselijk om erachter te komen dat ze een heks is. Madison kan de gedachten van andere mensen horen (dit is dus niet helemaal dezelfde kracht als die van Phoebe, zij kon namelijk in het verleden en de toekomst kijken)!

Helaas is nog niet bekend welke actrices de rollen van Macy, Mel en Madison gaan spelen in de Charmed reboot. Dus daar moeten we nog even op wachten!

Verhaal en LGBT-karakter
Lang gingen er geruchten dat de Charmed reboot zich in het verleden zou gaan afspelen, maar het lijkt er nu op dat het verhaal zich toch in het heden zal gaan afspelen. Het script wordt geschreven door Jane the Virgin schrijvers: Jessica O’Toole en Amy Rardin. Zij hebben los gelaten dat de Charmed reboot grappig, feministisch en heftig zal worden. Het zal, net als in de originele serie, gaan over drie zussen die ontdekken dat ze heksen zijn.

Een klein verschilletje met de originele serie is dat een karakter uit de Charmed reboot een LGBT-karakter is! Mel Pruitt is namelijk lesbisch. De producers zijn al op zoek naar een goede actrice die de rol van Mels vriendin kan gaan spelen! Daarnaast zijn ze ook van plan om veel verschillende etniciteiten in de Charmed reboot te verwerken.

The CW heeft van de nieuwe ‘Charmed’ reeks een pilot aflevering besteld, hierbij komt de ‘remake’ van de serie dichterbij. De plannen voor de serie zijn wel enigszins gewijzigd, nadat op eerdere berichtgeving negatief werd gereageerd op het plot door de fans van de orginele reeks. Zo zal de serie nu draaien om drie zussen die op de universiteit zitten en erachter komen dat ze heksen zijn, daarnaast speelt de serie af in de tegenwoordige tijd. Eerder waren de plannen voor de serie over drie vriendinnen in de jaren zeventig. Nu de serie in de tegenwoordige tijd plaatsvindt, zou dit eventueel de mogelijkheid bieden dat de originele castleden te zien zal zijn in de serie. In verschillende media berichten wordt hier al over gespeculeerd.

Het is nog niet bekend wie de hoofdrollen in de nieuwe reeks gaan vertolken of wanneer de serie verwacht wordt op TV. Holly is tot nu toe het enige orignele castlid dat gereageerd heeft op het nieuws. Ze lijkt niet geheel blij te zijn met het nieuws over de remake in haar twitter berichten, maar in reacties van fans die vragen stelde aan haar laat ze wel weten dat ze de makers het beste wenst met de nieuwe reeks.

Hoewel ik zelf misschien liever een remake had gehad met de nieuwe cast, ben ik wel benieuwd hoe ze de nieuwe reeks vorm gaan geven :)

De televisieserie Charmed krijgt, ruim tien jaar na het verschijnen van de laatste aflevering, een nieuw seizoen. De nieuwe afleveringen draaien om drie nieuwe zussen die ontdekken dat ze magische krachten hebben.

De personages van Rose McGowan (Paige), Alyssa Milano (Phoebe) en Holly Marie Combs (Piper) zijn niet langer de hoofdpersonages, zo melden verschillende entertainmentsites. Wie wel de hoofdrollen op zich nemen is nog niet besloten.

Een jaar geleden besloot zender CW al dat er nieuwe afleveringen zouden komen in de Charmed-reeks. Destijds was het idee om het seizoen zich te laten afspelen in de jaren zeventig, maar nu is besloten de reeks zich toch te laten afspelen in de moderne tijd.

Hoofdrolspeelsters
Of de originele hoofdrolspeelsters, waar ook Shannon Doherty (Prue) tot gerekend kan worden, terugkeren in de nieuwe reeks is nog niet bekend. Geruchten daarover doen wel al de ronde.

Combs maakte via Twitter in elk geval haar ongenoegen over het nieuws duidelijk en stelt dat de serie haar, McGowan, Milano en Doherty ’toebehoort’. “Waag het niet om geld te gaan verdienen aan een serie waar wij zo hard voor hebben gewerkt.”

Here’s the thing. Until you ask us to rewrite it like Brad Kern did weekly don’t even think of capitalizing on our hard work. Charmed belongs to the 4 of us, our vast amount of writers, crews and predominantly the fans. FYI you will not fool them by owning a title/stamp. So bye.

Volgende de laatste geruchten hoopt de CW nog steeds verder te kunnen met een ‘Charmed’ reboot. Dit zou één van de redenen zijn waarom de ‘Riverdale’ spin-off ‘Sabrina’ verkocht is aan Netflix. Een achterliggende reden hiervoor is dat de rechten van ‘Charmed’ van CBS zijn, de ‘moeder’ zender van CW, waardoorhet vrije hand heeft in het verder ontwikkelen van de serie. Daarnaast zouden twee tv-series over heksen op de zender te veel zijn.

Na het officiële bericht in augustus van de WC dat het script van de ‘Charmed’ reboot herzien zou worden, is er geen nieuwe berichtgeving meer geweest over de stand van zaken vanuit de CW zelf.

“According to the rumors, The CW is bent on producing a reboot of “Charmed” as, allegedly, the reason why it passed on the “Sabrina Teenage Witch” series, which it was originally planning to produce as a pair to its “Riverdale” series was partly because of the “Charmed” reboot. After all, having two witch-centered series in the same network may be too much.

To recall, it was in September when The CW announced that it would be producing “Sabrina Teenage Witch” series. However, earlier this month, it was revealed that Netflix has picked up the series, ordering it a two-season run with a total of 20 episodes.

Reports claim that another reason why The CW favored a “Charmed” reboot over the “Sabrina Teenage Witch” series is that the latter is a property of CBS, the network’s mother company. Hence, The CW can have the freehand on whatever it wants to do with the series. Whereas, if the network chose “Sabrina Teenage Witch,” it would have worked in partnership with Warner Bros.

As of this writing, though, there is still no clear update on the “Charmed” reboot as the latest statement from The CW was made last August, when it revealed that the script for the project is still being developed by “Jane the Virgin” writer Jennie Snyder Urman. Unfortunately, the last official update was the same statement the network released when it announced in February that it was shelving the reboot temporarily following the backlash from the fans of the original “Charmed,” which aired on CBS from 1998 to 2006.
