Kaley Cuoco Says She Doesn’t ‘Need’ Her Husband For Anything—And That’s A Good Thing

“If Karl left me tomorrow, I’d be fine.”

Kaley Cuoco’s doctor is upset with her. A few weeks afterThe Big Bang Theory star’s post-wedding shoulder surgery this summer, she began posting videos of her one-arm workouts. They included squats and hauling what looks like a giant sled across a parking lot as she sweats and makes the kind of fierce warrior face even an actress can’t fake.

In person, Kaley is a friendly, thoughtful, blonde ball of sunshine. She greets me warmly in her adorable office wearing leggings, a tee, Givenchy slip-ons—she can’t bend down to tie shoes while her shoulder heals—and a baseball cap. She’s got hummus, veggies, fruit, and water laid out. She looks strong and healthy.

It’s just…she’s not a huge fan of the brace she’s supposed to wear, so she sneaks it off now and then.

Kaley’s doctor isn’t the only person irked by her workout videos lately. Because she’s a star of one of the most-watched shows in the world, and because some people view women’s bodies as public property, the Instagram comments aren’t pretty.

Lots of folks think she looks great. Others are angry at her for—gasp!—not wearing a bra in one of the post-surgery vids. One observer advises Kaley that breasts are for a woman’s husband and for feeding children. So how does the 32-year-old actress handle that level of scrutiny without freaking out? Well, she’s been wildly famous since TBBT began its run in 2007, so she’s been in this game for a minute. (The show’s 12th and final season will end in 2019.)

“They’re not champions. It’s a Band-Aid to make Hollywood feel better.” Interview by Decca Aitkenhead

This time last year, Harvey Weinstein was a revered Hollywood producer, Kevin Spacey was the darling of Broadway, and the reputations of trusted household names from Morgan Freeman to Mario Testino gleamed with unimpeachable respectability. Rose McGowan was mostly famous for starring in the cutesy supernatural TV show Charmed.

And then, exactly 12 months ago, news broke that the actress was one of eight women whom Weinstein had paid to keep quiet about alleged sexual assaults. Within days, the story was blazing through Hollywood like a wildfire, and the world watched agog as reputation after reputation went up in flames. Before long, hundreds of famous men all over the world had been exposed as sexual predators and abusers, and fired.

“So there’s really no limit to what we can cover.”

On the CW’s Charmed reboot, three sisters discover that they are witches who hold the power to fight evil forces lurking beneath the surface — literally, the underworld — of their hometown. But for oldest sister Macy Vaughn, played by British actor Madeleine Mantock, her newfound telekinetic ability is just one of the shocking revelations she must come to terms with.
Macy initially moves to the fictional Hilltown, Michigan, to work in the local university lab as a geneticist. That is, until she’s faced with the startling realization that her new town is also home to the two half-sisters and late mother she never knew she had. Coincidence? We think not. For the science and logic-driven Macy, the news is quite a lot to process.

“Macy’s a character who is really great with her mind, but not so great with her emotions, and so it’s been really fun to get to play that,” Madeleine tells Teen Vogue. “It’s kind of a first for me.”

The twenty-eight-year-old actor previously starred on British shows Casualty and Lee Nelson’s Well Funny People, along with AMC’s Into the Badlands and the CW’s The Tomorrow People. But playing Macy, she says, is also the first time she’s gotten to portray a character who is not secondary to a lead male role. Instead, Charmed focuses on Macy’s relationship with her sisters Maggie and Mel, played by Sarah Jeffery and Melonie Diaz, respectively.
The series, which premieres October 14, is described by the network as being “fierce, feminist, and funny,” so it makes sense that sisterhood is a key element of its plotline. And while many of Hollywood’s depiction of witches still follow stereotypical tropes of old, evil, and ugly women on the hunt for youth and beauty (sorry, Hocus Pocus), Charmed attempts to reclaim the use of magic and show its powerful and positive impact through well-rounded, three-dimensional, complex characters. As the sisters attempt to uncover the supernatural circumstances surrounding their mother’s mysterious death, they also tackle social and personal issues such as sexual harassment, self-confidence, and grief — in Macy’s case, the loss of a parent she never got the chance to know.

“I think the idea is for us to be as brave as we can, and we’re kind of blessed in the sense that we can have this duality of demons that you and I might face in this real world [that] can also present themselves as metaphysical demons that the characters as witches can try and vanquish,” Madeleine says. “So there’s really no limit to what we can cover.”

And with the show’s cast, Charmed also breaks pop culture’s tired tradition of only affording white women the opportunity to play witches. Although the show has been characterized as having Latinx main characters, Madeleine points out that women of color might be a more accurate term to describe her and her castmates: Madeleine is Afro-Caribbean and British, Melonie is Latinx, and Sarah is African-American, English, and Indigenous Canadian. With the announcement that there is also a Latinx witch in Charmed’s writing room, fans are excited that the series will finally pay homage to the fact that witchcraft is largely prevalent in communities of color.

“For me, it’s a necessity. It’s something that we should’ve had a long time ago,” says Madeleine. “But I’m happy it’s going to happen now, and I just hope that we can do more because I don’t think it stops with just having hired us three to be the three sisters.”

She does, however, point out that she doesn’t want this representation to be taken to the extreme of tokenism, which is why her, her castmates, and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman (who also worked on Jane the Virgin) all spoke about how to make sure the series authentically reflects the sisters’ heritage. One solution, Madeleine explains, has been for Macy to have a different father than her sisters, and thus open up her character’s storyline to explore her background and the multitude of cultures that exist within witchcraft. Although she can’t give much away yet, she says she’s excited for the show to progress and respectfully honor Macy’s Afro-Latina identity as well as the practices and origins of witchcraft she’ll discover along the way.
“I think it’s important to do it because if you don’t, you end up just going, ‘Yeah, sure. She can play that. She looks passable enough,” Madeleine tells Teen Vogue. “I think we’re being conscious not to do that, and we’re being honest about the characters that we’re playing, how we got to be here, and how we’re trying to approach the story so that we can give a fair and honest representation of who these characters are.”

As we get ready to watch the sisters embark on their adventures and learn to love and accept their own powers —both figuratively and literally — Madeleine hopes their journeys inspire us to look inside ourselves, too. After all, you don’t have to be a witch to believe in your own magic.

“I would love for people who watch our show to have a sense of confidence to really feel empowered that however they are is brilliant,” she says. “Just that idea that no one is you and that’s your power.”

Rose zal de Inspiration award ontvangen tijdens de 21st annual GQ Men Of The Year Awards 2018.

Dylan Jones, Editor van GQ over de keuze voor Rose: “This award recognises the sheer strength and bravery Rose McGowan has shown in coming forward and being one of the first to publicly accuse an industry figurehead of grossly abusing his position of power. Rose is the absolute embodiment of this award and it will be great to watch her receive the award next month.”

Rose’s reactie: “I’m proud to be honored by GQ in receiving the Man Of The Year Inspiration award. It’s a new dawn, a new day for all of us to celebrate positive societal change.”

How Rose McGowan escaped the horror of Hollywood and then set it alight

“We have to look at the origin story and demolish it. The Bible, religion, and Hollywood.”

When she was a professional actor, Rose McGowan says she changed her voice for every role. For Charmed, the WB sitcom about witches that she starred in between 2001 and 2006, she adopts a high-pitched, girlish inflection. In the 1999 dark teen comedy Jawbreaker, she uses a more forthright tone that draws itself out from her chest, with a dash of sarcastic vocal fry.

On the audiobook version of her 2017 memoir Brave, she speaks in what she says is her real voice. It has a deeper resonance than she ever had in the movies, and reverberates with the memory of the traumatic experiences she describes. She tells of her neglectful parents, an abusive boyfriend, and her demeaning early experiences as a teenager in Hollywood. Most notoriously, she claims she was raped by movie producer Harvey Weinstein. (Weinstein has denied any accusations of non-consensual sex.) Occasionally, her voice shatters under the weight of her subject; but mostly, it’s a constant push forward, solid and unrelenting.

By McGowan’s account, the recording was made in a room with publishing representatives and an engineer, all of whom were deeply uncomfortable. She describes it when we meet on a bright March afternoon in a London coffee shop that overlooks the sparkling Thames – and a construction site. (McGowan quips knowingly, “I like beauty with a little brutality.”) I tell her that listening to the book has been an intense and moving experience. It’s often, if I’m honest, too much – but that reaction makes me question where that instinct to call her “too much” may come from. Victims of abuse are often made to feel they should keep their trauma to themselves, for the sake of decorum or comfort – it’s another way we re-victimise people who have suffered.

Kaley is te zien op de mei 2018 cover van Cosmopolitan.

Kaley Cuoco on Walking Down the Aisle the Second Time
The ‘Big Bang Theory’ actress is our May cover star!

On walking down the aisle for the second time (to fiancée Karl Cook): “I honestly thought I wouldn’t get married again. My ex ruined that word for me. I married someone the first time who completely changed. The person I ended up with was not the person I originally met. And that wasn’t my fault—that was his. I knew how much I had to give and how much I wanted to receive. I knew I just had to be patient…I had to go through a lot of things, but it brought me to Karl.”

On The Big Bang Theory — and being the second-highest-paid TV actress (behind Sophia Vergara): “I spent my entire 20s on this show. I didn’t have to fight for pay … Knowing what it feels like [to be paid as an equal], I will always take that stand for myself.”

On being a girl boss and running her own production company, Yes, Norman Productions:
“I want to be a full-on girl boss. I’ve been in the business so long, and I’ve worked with the best. I don’t let people mess with me. I want to show girls out there that you can be cool, wear yoga clothes, and run your own fucking company. You don’t have to be a guy in a suit. I want this to be a big company. I want to be sitting down a few years from now and have so many projects going. That’s what I’m excited about.”
