Madeleine Mantock stars in the leading role in London’s West End stage Royal Shakespeare Company adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling 2020 novel HAMNET, having opened at The Garrick on the 30 September 2023. Madeleine makes her RSC debut as the world-renowned playwright’s wife ‘Agnes Hathaway’ in the story that puts ‘Shakespeare’s wife in the spotlight at last’ (New York Times). Adapted by award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabati (Life of Pi) this re-telling centres on the untimely death of their only son and reimagines the toll that that death would have on their family and how that may have gone on to inspire one of the greatest plays of all time, Hamlet.

Recently enjoying a sold-out run in Shakespeare’s home town of Stratford-Upon-Avon, following the world premiere press night, Madeleine was cited as ‘outstanding’ (The Times), exuding ‘a compelling composure and air of otherworldliness as the seer-like Agnes’ and ‘with a serene and stoical grace’ (The New York Times).

Here Madeleine explains what drew her to the role and gives an insight into her beauty secrets.

What initially drew you to play Agnes Hathaway?
I knew how much of a challenge it would be to try to live that story eight times a week and wanted to see if I had it in me.

What is the biggest difference between HAMNET the play and the novel by Maggie O’Farrell?
Lolita Chakrabarti’s adaption is told in a more linear timeline than Maggie’s novel. But we’ve kept the essence of the story and if you’re a fan of the novel you’ll definitely see, on stage, the characters you discovered on the page.

Did it feel special to start your Hamnet journey in Stratford-Upon-Avon, Agnes’ hometown?
It did. Stratford seemed like a real shrine to William Shakespeare and so it felt exciting to be shining a light on the rest of his family in their hometown.

How do you relate to Agnes?
One thing I love about playing Agnes is that the story spans such a huge chunk of her life. We see her struggling to blossom as a young woman, falling in love, marriage, motherhood, grief and freedom. There’s something for everyone to relate to.

veryone knows the story of Hamlet. But few know the inspiration. Shakespeare had three children with his wife Anne Hathaway. The eldest, a girl named Susanna. The later two, twins, named Judith and Hamnet. In the summer of 1596, Hamnet died tragically at the age of eleven. In a fever of grief, four years later, Shakespeare bore the words of Hamlet. He flipped the script and told the story of a son haunted by the death of his father, all the while he was the father haunted by the death of his son. Maggie O’Farrell fills in the blanks of that real story with her award-winning novel Hamnet.

Now that story can be lived through thanks to the adaptation by Lolita Chakrabarti, the woman who most recently wrote the stage script for Life of Pi. It’s being transferred to the West End after just four months in Stratford: Hamnet is a hit before opening night.

A story told over a period of 20 years, the show has all the staples of a play written by the bard himself. There’s mystery and magic, a forbidden love story, and a tragedy all too heavy to bear. But don’t let the title fool you. Hamnet is its name, and Shakespeare walks the stage, but the spotlight falls on his wife, Agnes Hathaway. (A name change taken by creative liberties of O’Farrell)

The woman at the edge of the forest, Agnes has the ability to look at a person and see right through to their soul. She is played by Madeleine Mantock, a woman not unfamiliar with magical roles – most recently, a witch in the Charmed reboot. We sat down with the star of the show to discuss how she went from competitive disco dancing to taking centre stage in the theatrical event of the year.

What made you want to perform?
Where I grew up there was no theatre. Then a man called Jordi Guitart came to my dance school to do a dance masterclass. He had all this knowledge and all this essence; I wanted to be like him. I remember being told, “You don’t really get to do it. It’s too difficult, it’s too competitive.” I was like, “Well, I will. Even if it was 10% or 5%, I will be part of the 5%.” I’ve kept that obnoxious drive since.

What happens next after this discovery? Do you find theatre or keep dancing?
It was still only dancing at that point. I used to be a competitive freestyle disco dancer, which is quite niche. It’s like if you brought Strictly Ballroom into this century. You are spray tanned within an inch of your life. Your hair is scraped onto your head, and you curl it so you have this poof there. You’re wearing Swarovski crystals, crazy cat-eye makeup. You almost look like a peacock. You have this insane neon costume, which is bejewelled.

You go to a regional leisure centre, and there are different judges placed around the room in a rectangle. There will be 20 of you in a heat, which is like a round, and you strut onto the floor and they play any random music and you just dance to it in a square.

That’s one heat. If you make it past that round, you do it again. By the final, you come on from the side doing tricks and flips and you dance forwards in a line. It’s a whole day, it’s a massive, massive industry. It’s very niche but the BBC made a documentary about it.

How do you make your way to ArtsEd?
It wasn’t easy. But I wasn’t afraid to ask for help. When I was trying to get to school, I had to find a way to pay for it. When I was 18, school bills were ten and a half grand. At the time, regular university was three grand for a year. For a specialist course, that’s the difference you needed to pay.

I was writing to people, I made my own kind of pamphlet. I ended up having seven or eight people who had given money to help me get onto my course. I used to write them update letters about what I was getting up to at school, and what we were doing.

My school had quite a lot of opportunities to go and be a chorus for big events. We performed at the BBC Proms, we did a Sondheim birthday celebration. I used to tell the people helping me, “I’m really doing this. This is what your help is doing.”

Who were the people that ended up helping?
One of them was a local councillor, Rod Kempster. I had written to him and asked for help. He was the person who said yes and signed the cheque. You have to build a personal connection with someone. You have to convince them that you can do this.

When I went to ArtsEd, and I saw the other students, I knew it was where I was meant to go. But I didn’t get in. You’re not allowed to re-apply in the same year; you’re supposed to wait a year. But because I was so on it, I had auditioned first day of that cycle. So I wrote to them and said, ‘Please, can I try again?’

You’re a lady of letters…
Yes! They weren’t sure my singing was strong enough. But I said to them, ‘If you’re supposed to be the best school for musical theatre then you should be able to teach me.’ And then the head of music Dane Preece let me in! I was really tenacious. I really thought I was supposed to go there.

“I don’t think I’m going to be single forever,” the ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’ actress tells PEOPLE in its latest cover story

At any given chance, Shannen Doherty finds a sense of hope and possibility.

During her PEOPLE cover shoot a few days before Thanksgiving, the Beverly Hills, 90210 and Charmed alum, 52, says she recently realized that she’s ready to find love again.

“I was not ready at all before three weeks ago,” she admits candidly. “And something happens. There’s always a trigger, just a moment that you have, somebody says something to you, your ex says one thing to you and you’re like, ‘Okay, yeah, I’m good. I’m good.’ I have closure and I can move on in a really healthy way.”

Asked what that future relationship looks like, Doherty admits she doesn’t know.

“I have a best friend, a male best friend who we joke that we’re married,” she added. “I don’t know if it’s that or if it’s stumbling upon somebody and just feeling an instant connection. I’m open, and I wasn’t [before].”

She continues, “I don’t think I’m going to be single forever. I have to love myself and reckon with the past, really, before I can move forward, and now I’m pretty sure I’ll meet somebody — hopefully soon.”

After 11 years of marriage, Doherty split from her third husband Kurt Iswarienko in April. (The couple separated in January and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason in their divorce filing.)

Although she says she spent a lot of “good years” with him, Doherty — who was previously married to Rick Salomon from 2002 to 2003 and Ashley Hamilton from 1993 to 1994 — is ready to move on from her past.

“Listen, Elizabeth Taylor still has me beat as far as husbands and divorces, so I’m good. I’m not there yet, so there’s no reason to be negative about it. S— happens,” she says of her breakup.

Shannen Doherty Files for Divorce from Husband of 11 Years Kurt Iswarienko

The actress has spent the last few years undergoing treatment for Stage 4 breast cancer. She will be discussing her relationships — as well as her career and her cancer journey — in her upcoming live memoir-style podcast, Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty, premiering Dec. 6.

From the moment she was diagnosed in 2015, she admits it was terrifying for her. “It was definitely one of those moments where you wonder if you’re going to make it at all, but it’s also where you learn the most about yourself because you have to really dig deep and gather the strength to face it head on and keep marching forward,” she says.

For her, that strength comes from her family and loved ones, and the star says she’s also open to the idea of motherhood.

“I would love nothing more than to be a mom,” she says. “I always wanted it, and I think if I did it with my best friend or a partner, then I don’t know any amount of time…”

She pauses a moment, then continues. “I look at kids who don’t have parents at all — any amount of time [with a parent] is better than nothing. I vacillate. I’m biding my time, but in the meantime, I’ve got my brother’s seven kids and my best friend’s kids, who I kind of view as my children.”

Although Doherty acknowledges she’s suffered some periods of feeling depressed, she remains hopeful for life and love.

“Things have not been exactly easy and smooth. They’ve been really challenging at times, and it’s hard to find yourself suddenly single in your 50s, and with Stage 4 cancer. That’s a hard one,” she admits. “And that was super depressing for a while now, but eventually you turn a corner.”

Now Doherty is welcoming what may come with open arms. “I didn’t want to jump into anything and not have it all sorted in my head because then I’m no good to another person at that point,” she says. “Now I’m ready.”

With a revised book by Aaron Sorkin, the actor says that the upcoming Broadway production feels like a new musical, rather than a revival.

Four years ago, director Bartlett Sher asked Jordan Donica to star in a one-night-only gala performance of Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot at Lincoln Center Theater. Ever since, he’s been digging into the character of the dashing Lancelot and will soon turn all his preparation to action in the upcoming revival of the musical at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.

Donica previously graced the Broadway stage as Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera and Freddy Eynsford-Hill in the 2018 production of My Fair Lady; on regional stages, he’s starred as Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in the Angelica tour of Hamilton. As the actor realized mid-conversation, “I’ve played a lot of French people.” It’s one of a few coincidences for Donica, who returns to the Vivian Beaumont for his second Lerner and Loewe musical there.

Kerry Washington, Oprah Winfrey and Sam Waterston are toplining Tyler Perry’s Six Triple Eight, the prolific director’s fourth film for Netflix.

Washington will also executive produce the film about the true story of the only all-black, all-female World War II battalion that proved key to the American war effort. The ensemble cast in the film, which has begun production, includes Ebony Obsidian, Milauna Jackson, Kylie Jefferson, Shanice Shantay, Sarah Jeffery, Pepi Sonuga and Jay Reeves.

Perry and his team also cast Jeanté Godlock, Moriah Brown, Baadja-Lyne Odums, Gregg Sulkin, Dean Norris and Susan Sarandon. Perry wrote the script for Six Triple Eight, which his based on an article by Kevin M. Hymel for WWII History magazine.

He will also produce the film alongside Nicole Avant, Keri Selig, Angi Bones, Carlota Espinosa and Tony Strickland, while Peter Guber will also executive produce.

Six Triple Eight recalls 855 women who joined the war effort with little knowledge of what exactly they would be doing, but were quickly given the mission to sort through and fix a three-year backlog of undelivered mail.

Their herculean task was done as the women faced discrimination, an unfamiliar land and a war-torn country as they sorted over 17 million pieces of mail, reconnecting American soldiers with their families and loved ones back home.

The story of the 6888th Postal Directory Battalion, until now kept out of history books, was restored on March 14th, 2022 when U.S. President Joe Biden signed a bill for the women to receive the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress’ highest honor.

Six Triple Eight will mark Perry’s latest film he directed for Netflix after A Fall From Grace, A Madea Homecoming, and A Jazzman’s Blues. Perry, WME and Johnson Shapiro recently inked a four-picture deal with Amazon Studios.

Washington is repped by CAA, Washington Square Arts, The Lede Company and Hansen Jacobsen.
