Milano is an actor, activist and a Co-Chair of the Health Care Voter campaign.
I have a secret, and I am not alone.I am a mother, an actor and an activist — and like over 40 million Americans, I live with a mental illness. This Mental Health Awareness Month, I am joining the people nationwide who are standing up, sharing their stories and demanding that lawmakers defend our access to health care.
My Generalized Anxiety Disorder was most likely triggered by my postpartum depression, and my journey with mental illnesses began with my journey into motherhood.
In 2011, two years after suffering a miscarriage, I learned that I was pregnant with my first son, Milo — and it was a dream. My miscarriage was heartbreaking, but this pregnancy was beautiful: I did not experience morning sickness; I went to prenatal yoga five times a week; I walked two miles a day; and I took naps in the afternoon.
Following this idyllic image of motherhood, I wrote a strict birth plan: no induction of labor, no pain medication and no c-sections. I equated a natural birth to my value as a woman and as a mother — and I was determined not to stray from that course.
But life does not always go according to plan.
On August 31, 2011, ten days before my due date, I began to have complications. Despite my plan, the doctors had to try to induce labor. I was forced to take an epidural, and I eventually delivered my beautiful son (after 18 hours of labor and three and a half hours of pushing) via C-section. And then, with my darling son in my hands, I was in excruciating pain not only from my C-section but also, from my milk coming in.
That first night, after we returned from the hospital, I suffered my first anxiety attack. I felt like I had already disappointed my child. I felt like I failed as a mother, since I was not able to give birth vaginally or nourish him with the breast milk that had not come in yet. My heart raced. My stomach seized up. I felt like I was dying.
I recovered. But a few months later, Milo spiked a very high fever and had a febrile seizure in my arms, and my paralyzing anxiety reared its head again.
No, no, no, I thought to myself. This can’t be happening again. I don’t have time for this. This was still 2011, and I was supposed to start work on a television show the following week.
I told myself that I needed to keep myself together.
As we began filming, my anxiety worsened. I began to develop irrational and obsessive fears. Like many working moms, I was overwhelmed by guilt for leaving my son during work hours, and like many others who suffer from anxiety, my pain was not taken seriously.
Every day, I would drive to work and think about all the ways that Milo could die in the hands of his caretakers. Every night, after working 16-hour days, after I was finally able to hold my child and put him to sleep, my day’s anxiety would culminate into a debilitating anxiety attack.
Finally, I hit a wall. One early morning, I went to the emergency room at 2:00 AM, asked for a psychiatrist and got help. I felt as though I had no choice: I asked to be committed; I stayed in a public psychiatric ward for three days.
At last, I began to feel as if my pain was recognized, but it wasn’t easy. One of my doctors dismissed my symptoms, and many of my colleagues, even female colleagues, still had trouble understanding that I was hurting at all.
But throughout this process, I also found angels — including my psychiatrist and my therapist. They convinced me that I had the bravery to face my illness, the value to seek help and the strength to recover.
And I am continuing to do all three. And most likely I will for the rest of my life.
Here’s the thing about mental illnesses: you don’t always look sick, and the answers are not always clear or black-and-white. But we should not confront these challenges by placing more hurdles in front of Americans who desperately need the care. I was lucky enough to have the means and the insurance to get the help and support I needed. What happens to those mothers who don’t have the kind of support I received?
Mental health is also not a threat that can only happen to someone else: one in six Americans face mental illness, and less than half of them receive any form of mental health services.
Let’s rededicate ourselves to talking about mental health. Let’s demand that our lawmakers pass policies that open — not restrict — our access to mental health services. Let’s remind each other that no one should have to face these challenges by themselves.
And if you see me on the street, please come tell me that I am not alone.

Certain images will forever be linked to Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings. There’s Christine Blasey Ford with her hand raised and eyes closed, swearing to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth about her alleged sexual assault in high school. Then there’s Supreme Court nominee (now justice) Brett Kavanaugh, red faced, teeth gritted, sniveling as he aggressively denies the allegations. And then, wait, is that Alyssa Milano? With a clipboard? What is she doing there?
At least that’s the question many were asking when images of Milano, front and center at the hearings, went viral. Twitter had a field day meme-ing the Charmed actress as either a real-life good witch or bad witch, depending on whose side you were on. Saturday Night Live seized upon Milano’s attendance as the running gag of its opening sketch that weekend. Her presence sparked confusion—and levity—but within the context of American politics of the past two years, it wasn’t unusual. And in a way, Milano’s familiar, frustrated face in the crowd served as a sort of communal exasperation, expressing what so many were thinking (and what Ford’s face could not), namely: “Can you believe this shit?”
But then again, to a particular subset of the population, Milano is known more for her activism than for playing Phoebe on Charmed. Forget who—anyone born after 2000 is probably asking what even is Who’s the Boss? After all, three days after attending the Kavanaugh hearings at the invitation of Senator Dianne Feinstein, Milano was in Parkland, Florida, “to be with the families of the kids who lost their lives and the youth activists” at the Actions for Change Food & Music Festival. Say what you will about celebrity activism—that it oversimplifies the issues, that it’s a spotlight grab disguised as “awareness-building”—Milano walks the walk.

Alyssa Milano is channeling her activism in a new mode: children’s books.
EW can exclusively announce that Milano has signed a major book deal with Scholastic to publish a series entitled Hope, with the first volume slated for an Oct. 1, 2019 release. Illustrated by Eric S. Keyes, it’s described as an empowering fiction series centered on a spunky 11-year-old girl who seeks to create social change in her community.

She believes in dreaming big. She’s brave and strong and confident in her abilities — but she’s also a girl just trying to survive middle school. I’m thrilled to be working with Scholastic on this empowering book series and can’t wait for everyone to meet Hope.”
Named one of the 2017 Persons of the Year in TIME magazine alongside other activists, Milano gained notice last year for helping to popularize the #MeToo movement. As an actress she’s known for her roles in Charmed, Melrose Place, and Who’s the Boss? (see a photo from her childhood role above) and she most recently appeared in the Netflix series Insatiable.
“I’ve been a huge fan of Alyssa Milano’s for years and I was so excited from the very moment she shared her idea and vision for Hope — a series centered around a smart and passionate character who is ready to conquer the world,” Debra Dorfman, Vice President and Publisher for Global Licensing, Brands and Media of Scholastic, said in a statement. “Alyssa is such positive role model and I admire how she uses her voice and her platform to help those in need around the world, especially children. We at Scholastic are thrilled to share her inspiring and hopeful message to kids everywhere.”
Op de website Toys for Tots heeft Alyssa een donatie actie gestart voor de kinderen in de plaats Flint, inmiddels is al meer dan de $20,000 die hiervoor vroeg opgehaald. Ook doneren klik dan hier.
The Flint water crisis is not over even though the federal water assistance they were receiving has stopped.
And 60% of children in Flint live below the poverty line.
I’m giving up my Birthday this year to raise awareness for the children struggling in Flint and ensuring they receive toys this holiday season.
Will you please help me by making a donation?

Alyssa Milano says her home has been spared by a Southern California wildfire that forced her family to evacuate.
The actress tweeted Saturday that her house “is still standing” a day after she and thousands of others were forced to hurriedly evacuate because of the fast-moving fire.
Milano on Friday asked for help evacuating her five horses, later updating that they and her family were safe.
Numerous stars are waiting to learn the fate of their homes and prized possessions.
Rainn Wilson tweeted Saturday that flames came within about a dozen yards of his home, but it was spared. Lady Gaga tweeted late Friday that she did not know the status of her home.
Authorities have said more than 150 homes have burned in the fire and that number would likely rise.
Alyssa was de afgelopen weken aanwezig op enkele events, daarnaast was ze ook in Washington D.C. om te protesteren tegen Brett Kavanaugh.
